The Vast Amazon

The Amazon River

This is one of the world's largest and densest areas, covering more than 1.5 million square miles. Starting in the Andes, there are several rivers that flow down to make up the Amazon, the longest river in the world and subject of legends and stories. At least 15% of the world's oxygen is produced here, with more than 2,500 species of fish, 1,500 species of birds, and more than 50,000 species of plants.

The Amazon Lodge

Located some 30 miles down river from Iquitos, the Amazon Lodge is close enough for easy access to the city, yet far enough to keep the surrounding flora and fauna untouched by civilization. Set on 2,470 acres of virgin rain forest and built entirely of local materials, the Amazon Lodge can accommodate up to 90 persons. The bungalows are all connected by covered walkways, with twin-bedded rooms and private bath/showers. There is no electricity to scare off the local animals and birds, but plenty of kerosene and gas lanterns. While accommodations are primitive, you will have the basic safety and comfort needed for your visit. The meals are famous at the lodge, and you will have a chance to sample local delicacies. All meals are included while at the lodge, and there is only a modest surcharge for alcoholic drinks. The expert staff are all experienced hands in the Amazon and are eager to share their knowledge with you. But the lodge is only the jump-off for excursions into the jungle, with its flora and fauna, across magnificent lagoons, including visits to nearby Yagua Indian villages, and night caiman hunting. This will truly be a memorable visit and adventure in the Amazon Rain Forest.
