Uruguay may be pint-sized, but it is certainly big-hearted when it comes to attractions. The country contains one of South America's most interesting capitals, charming colonial towns, and one of South America's internationally renowned beach resorts, Punta del Este.

A trip to South America was once an extensive journey to places ad cities. Down one coast, across the continent and up the other coast. This is still a good bet for first time visitors with lots of time. But, ask yourself... how long would it take to see the most important cities and sights of the United States? Then double that for South America because it is almost twice the size! Today's preferences are for shorter trips to a single country or region - which is the theme of the this site. Let's start with Uruguay!

Montevideo

The capital and only large city in Uruguay sprawls along the banks of the Rio de la Plata, almost directly opposite Buenos Aires. It is a picturesque place of colonial Spanish, Italian, and art deco styles. Most attention is focused on the Ciudad Vieja, the old city, built on a peninsula close to the port and harbor, and the commercial center located around Plaza Independencia to the east.
